ANRD January Update

In January this year, the SPCA was invited to meet with ANRD officers and Mr Dick Beales, the senior natural resources and environment advisor for the Department for International Development (DFID). At this meeting one of the main items discussed was the provision of veterinary services for the island. There were two views on this; one was to have short term veterinarian support to the island on a regular basis, the other was to have a resident veterinarian doctor whose services could be extended to include pets and other animals. It was decided that the Chief Agricultural and Natural Resources Officer would draft terms of reference for a consultant to review the current situation on the island with regard to animal care and to consider future needs with a view to making a recommendation for future veterinarian provision. It was agreed that all stakeholders should be invited to give their views as to what should be included in the terms of reference. The ANR Department would approach DFID for funding for this consultancy.
The SPCA has also been invited to join a discussion forum to agree actions and address the nuisance of mynah birds and feral pigeons.

We also been invited by "SNCG &
Wirebird Species Action Plan Co-ordinator" to attend a meeting to engage in dialogue about the problems of feral cats as predators, in this particular case, of wirebirds and seabirds and to consider what actions could be taken forward to help educate and raise awareness amongst owners and the public generally.
