Promotional/awareness raising materials for use in schools and for the wider community e.g.
· Care of animals; pets, especially dogs and cats, livestock; sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry
· Raising awareness (of local merchants and importers) of the barbaric practice in Asia of the killing of dogs and cats for their pelts for export
· Animal cruelty
The island does not have qualified veterinarian services, all animal treatments are carried out by local officers who have been trained by visiting Veterinarians. Due to a high staff turnover, a lot of the local expertise is no longer on the island, therefore books and training materials on animal care and veterinarian services would be most welcomed. An area of particular concern is animal obstetrics, especially for cattle, sheep and pigs; any books and training materials (dummy animals to allow trainees to practice on etc.) related to this would be extremely useful.
Books on bee keeping would also be very helpful.
Wormers and flea treatments for dogs (small dogs and large dogs – up to 30 kg) and flea treatments for cats. Due to the physical isolation of the island and the infrequent mail service (there is no airport on St Helena) it would be helpful if any treatments sent could have a long shelf life.
Syringes – 1ml – 5ml
Bandages – assorted – particularly for fractures and wounds
Cotton swabs
Electrical shears (battery pack) to assist in training local farmers in correct shearing procedures
Our organisation is currently assisting the community by supporting a dog training programme; any materials and equipment to assist in this field would be very useful
